I have a dog who has generously allowed me to share her life for the past 10 years. Her name is Sundancer, she is a Great Peraneese herding dog originated in those great mountains in Spain. She has been the sweetest, most loving and fun dog I have ever had.
In our life in Idaho, which has been almost all of her life, she has not been allowed to roam freely because of the Highway my house is situated on. I have lost 3 dogs on that highway over the years.
Since we came to Wyoming the end of September, she has loved being absolutely free and able to explore, but she has been slowly introducing herself into the new found freedom. . .not just running, or walking, off on her own. She has been eager to go with me or Debbie on a walk down the road or across the road to Deb’s sister’s house. Even in those small jaunts (in the scheme of the vast openness here) she has shown great enjoyment and pleasure.
Earlier this past week she began taking the long walk over to sister Sue’s house to visit Buck, the black Lab that she has fallen head over paws for. It has been so much fun for me to see her enjoy herself so much. She has acquainted herself with the closest neighbors and their dogs. She is so happy to see any of them that she almost wiggles out of her skin.
She met one of the neighbors a bit further down the road (one I haven’t met yet) and his small white terrier. She was so thrilled with meeting this small little fella she was almost dancing as she walked along with them.
Yesterday she made two trips over to visit Buck and then went on a longish exploration of the neighbors to the North of us for her third trip. For a good old girl of 140 pounds who hasn’t had a lot of opportunity for that sort of exercise she is so happy and enjoying herself it is just a JOY for me to see.
These are not short little walks, they are a quarter mile or a half mile each way as homes here are 20 or 40 acres apart. She is getting some great exercise and seems to be loving it. So is her mom, Shirl.
Now, I know in the scheme of things this is no big deal or of great importance to anyone, but my heart just is overflowing with how much enjoyment she is having. It is something she and I share. I am loving enormously my life and times here. . .it is wonderful to know that my furry friend is so filled with the joy of it too.
Hugs
Shirl
