The Second Time Around
Posted by whisel on October 29, 2009
I finished watching “The Uninvited”, and now that I know what it’s all about, I’m watching it again. I thought the first time through was a little predictable and the film would follow through as such till the end. I never expected the explanation, the meaning that was coming. So now that I know what it’s all about, I’m watching it again.
Only in the movies can we replay what we missed or what we may have misinterpreted. Too bad Life’s little scenarios can’t be replayed for comprehension or awareness to detail. Too bad we can’t see ourselves upon the screen and observe our role, our behavior, the dialogue we chose. Would we be pleased and validated? Or would we be shocked and aghast? Maybe a little of both.
The first time through the events of our lives (and the only time through) may seem like our occasions are a little predictable, formulaic. It can seem so at times. But I think, if we could see them through again, we might pick up on the clues…. see the patterns that cause our circumstances. SPOILER ALERT: Whatever we think is happening to us or within us may be a matter of perception, so if at all possible, choose to accept that it all means something much more expansive, much more significant than that which can be gleaned on the surface.
Scary, ain’t it? That all the moments of our life may be linked to the significance of our own development. That everything we say and do may be replayed for us some day and in some place as a Soul enrichment class. Yikes! Now I really need some popcorn….. with extra butter!
Best Wishes, Whisel* ……. ……. so, have you seen any good movies lately?

Very astute observation, Whisel*
In the rarefied space that I occupy these days, I have replayed those difficult scenes from past years of my experience. They look totally different from this perspective. I understand how it was that they seemed to be in the moment of their occurrence and marvel at what a different perspective presents to me now. It seems those things of happening in the place I once occupied were seen only through my very narrow, colored and me-centered view of how “dramatically” it affected me and only me in those moments. The more I held onto those probably misguided emotions of those events the more distorted they became.
Someone very wise (Diane) encouraged me to rewrite my past a few years ago. I thought that was an interesting and challenging thing to do. As I set about the task I was amazed at the insights and depth of knowing that came forth to shine a bigger light on it all. The more insights I gained, the more I could see that nothing really happened the way I had supposed at the time of the experience and the only thing keeping me from moving on and freeing myself from my imagined difficulties and painful experiences was me holding onto them.
I continue to rewrite my past as various pieces of it come up to be observed. As I rewrite I let go of the old perceptions and replace them with love and understanding of all the elements that created the experience.
I know for certain that we are NOT defined by our past but by our NOW and the who we are becoming and have become.
Perhaps I am currently enrolled in my own version of the “Soul Enrichment Class.” It would appear it is a continuing Education course.
About movies. . .I don’t watch very many these days, last one I viewed was Mama Mia and I enjoyed ABBA’s music and the frivolous and predictable story line.

Shirl, I like your new photo. You have that enigmatic smile… that seems to denote:
We are the Den of Silver Foxes now, for sure. Grey hair and glasses pretty much typifies our group. Although there are some that don’t turn wintery till much further in the journey. Good to see you, my friend.
Mystery Inside.
I like the idea of accumulating CEUs when revisiting past scenes. I myself, did much of that in my 30s when needing to manage personal history events that were wanting another look, a different perspective and some understanding. Rewriting one’s past sounds very healing.
And I agree, we are who we make of ourselves today. I believe in change. I believe in freedom. I believe in setting up for a beautiful day and walking into it. Not all the time and in every way, but whenever possible.

Interesting about your article today, I just watched a very interesting movie called the Skeleton Key, with kate Hudson and Gena Rowlands…
I usually don’t watch what appeared to be a thriller, but due to a dearth of other worthwhile watching programming I did actually watch this one.
It was very interesting but the ending was so hard to figure out I went to the web site for the movie and found that many others found the ending difficult also, so I do believe this is one movie that requires at least a second viewing.
Aside from that I often watch movies for second, third, even in some cases 10 or more times, often due to the reason I watched Skeleton Key…just nothing else to watch.
I agree, too bad we can’t do a second or third, viewing or just redo the scenes. and as shirl says above, rewriting your life does help with that.
So did you notice the ratings ability we have now.

Diane…. I did a look-up on Skeleton Key too. I think they chopped up the movie unmercifully to get it to fit into a prescribed time-slot. Even so, it was quite a puzzlement all the same. I DO like thrillers and twists, but I think it only fair that the movie explain itself in the end. Otherwise, I feel cheated that the audience is left up in the air.
Sometimes, I watch movies the 2nd or third time with the sound off, just so I can focus on the acting and special effects. Without the accompanying mood music, the film must live or die based only on what the eye can observe. An interesting study for me.
Thanks, Whisel*
